Steve Gettis
Some of the illuminaries showcased there, veritable "sci fi icons" as rendered in portrait by a vast array of sequential art professionals, include giants such as the ones that follow, headlined as they are by the one, the only Orson Welles...
All of these are spotlighted on Wired.com's "underwire" feature - a cyber version of the underground art movement, one guesses...! Go ahead - click on each one and see (try your luck - what is there to lose, eh?)
Steve Gettis got the project off the ground in 1998 by firing off 10 letters to illustrators whose work he enjoyed, asking if they might pass along sketches of their literary favorites.
And the rest is history - internet history, anyhow!
Wired.com should have spotlighted this on its TENTH anniversary, though...
What in blue blazes were they doing in 2008 that could possibly explain their missing out on it, huh? HUH?
(Me? I'm too busy to ferret out such things - but when they are brought out to my attention, I'll tip my hat to them, sure! Isn't it what I'm doing right now - eh?)
Steve Gettis can live without the applause though! Any publicity his art gallery gets is a bonus - he lives for the ART, man!
It is still shocking though that an established publication like Wired fumbles the ball like this - missing out on a 10th anniversary, they try to save face opining on it a bit at the 11th hour - narrowingly before it becomes 12th anniversary fare!? Might as well have waited for the 13th anniversary then - in 2011! Because no one is celebrating anniversaries in 2012, or so we've been hearing...
But that's another story again - damn!
So yeah - Wired dropped the ball on that one!
Still... Wired got me a tiny bit worked up about this, at this time:
Eye-Popping Blog Remixes Memorable Comic Book Covers
So, maybe, JUST MAYBE, their timing wasn't so bad...?
Nah.
It is totally off indeed: since I do not give a guinea pig's a$$ about "memorable comic-booky covers" anymore - much less remixes of them!
It's still worth a look though, I suppose - if only for the laughs...
